When, on his second expedition, his ship Endurance was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea, he made an 800-mile voyage in an open boat to South Georgia, then made the first crossing of that island, with two others, to save the rest of his men.)

I am not surprised. Somehow this sort of adventure contains a certain absolution for men who feel that thier lives have been largely meaningless or self-consumed
